My visit to Giant’s Cup Resort located a few miles outside the southern Drakensberg town of Underberg was to sample the fly fishing for which, not only the region, but also Giant’s Cup itself is highly rated. On the surface Giant’s Cup is a discrete resort located on a family farm nestling in a 110 hectare enclave within the 5000,000 hectare Drakensberg Park. Under the surface it is much more than this.
The property is owned in part, and managed by Wolf Avni, author and fly fishing supremo, who brings to the establishment the authenticity of a man deeply knowledgeable about both trout fishing and trout husbandry. Giant’s Cup operates an in-house trout hatchery that provides angling fish for wide distribution both locally and in the wider region, and table fish both fresh and smoked. Besides this, world class fly fishing is available on both the farm dam, from which trout of up to 12 pounds have been caught, and more routinely wild bred trout upwards of 5 pounds, and on the Umzimkulwana River, part of which flows through the property.
Accommodation is available in three lakeside self catering cottages that are simply appointed, but picturesque and very comfortable. The proximity of the Mzimkulu Wilderness Area, part of the much larger Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Mountain Park, a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE, offers the opportunity for fantastic single or multi-day hikes into the high range, and of course for fly fishing in many local waters, including the Umzimkulu River, recognized as one of South Africa’s premier trout rivers.
Other local activities include wide ranging horse trails, bird watching, mountain biking, bushman rock art and canoe/kayaking. Local tour operators run 4×4 trips up the rugged Sani Pass to the borders of Lesotho.
Giant’s Cup is exclusively self catering and no formal catering facilities exist. The setting is rustic and the facilities basic, but the great appeal of this establishment is its unspoilt beauty, and, of course, the superb fly fishing. A highly recommended destination for fly fishermen and the general outdoors enthusiast. An Eco Travel Africa A list recommendation.
